 JOHAN BRINK
Johan first attended a watercolour course in 1998 presented by the late Tim Robson, one of the Southern Cape 's great watercolourists.
Business intervened for a few years, but, encouraged by Marion who was already well on her way in the art world, he attended a course by the acclaimed artist, Dale Elliot.
This inspirational experience proved to be the catalyst and Marion and Johan subsequently built their own studio in the Village of Storms River where they now spend as much time as possible at the easels.
Johan's love for watercolour was inspired by Tim Robson who constantly promoted the idea of simplicity in all his work. “When you paint the Karoo you must smell the dust.” was one of his sayings and “Your painting is completed 15 minutes before you put the brush down.”
Johan's thoughts on watercolour painting: “The difficulty of the medium and its unforgiving nature is amply offset by the ease with which a brush is cleaned with just water…and you can sit and work!”
Johan loves the unfussiness of the South African landscape, a cleanness that however hides a complexity and richness of tone and light.
