MADE IN SOUTH AFRICA RECIPE BOOK

This book was hand made by Marion and Johan in the village of Storms River, South Africa. All the pages are printed on paper which was manufactured from sustainable forest resources. Please avoid getting the pages wet ... the ink may run.

The wooden spine is made by Oupa Brink from indigenous wood which is sourced from very limited stocks harvested once per annum by South African National Parks. Use a dab of olive oil to keep the wood supple and healthy. Should you need to remove any of the pages, simply undo the bolts and slide the pages from the spine. Replacement pages are available for a small fee and postage.

The Story

Rafters Restaurant, named for the exposed roof beams in the double volume roof, has been serving country style cuisine since 1996. We opened Armagh Country Lodge in 1994 and after much cajoling from our guests who were not keen to march down the road at night to the local hotel for their dinners, we began serving our home cooked brand of food. In those days it was a somewhat more intimate affair with us joining the five or six patrons at our own dinner table.

As time went by, more and more guests discovered the Tsitsikamma (and Rafters Restaurant) and, due to demand, we started our nightly buffets with an introduction to South African cuisine by a wooden spoon wielding Johan (for pointing not pugilism). As this grew in popularity we found it necessary to introduce our a la carte menu and extend our opening hours to include breakfast and lunch.

This led to many patrons asking us for the recipes of the dishes and, after getting fed up with scribbling down the details every day, we decided to write and print a small recipe book which contained many of the Rafters dishes. This little book proved to be extremely popular both as a working recipe book and as a gift. To date we have sold well over 2000 copies (and killed several printers in the process) and the time has come to print the latest, mark 2, de luxe, improved volume. We have retained some of the old favourite recipes and added many new ones. We’ve also prettied it up with new photographs of the area, and the production of a working copy, sans frills. We trust that this book will provide you with much pleasure and the odd edible meal! Bon appetite!
